Tell us about your journey into the world of wine. What was the moment or inspiration that led you into winemaking?
Initially, I was attracted to the diversity of making wine, covering so many different facets like viticulture, chemistry, microbiology, etc. However, after my first harvest it was definitely the lifestyle that made me fall in love with the process.
I like the adrenaline and quick-thinking during harvest, as well as having an entire farm for an office. Also, with every harvest being unique there are always new challenges to look forward to.
What’s your proudest moment in wine?
Being named among South Africa’s ‘WineLand 30 Under 30’ last year and winning a gold medal for the Unwooded Chardonnay 2020, my maiden vintage as winemaker.
What’s your favourite grape varietal? Why do you like it?
My favourite grape varietal is Chardonnay. It is one of the easiest white grape varietals to work with in the cellar and you can create so many different wine styles from it.
If you find some time outside of making wine, what do you like to do?
I love to go hiking, walking my dog and spending time with family and friends, usually accompanied with good food and wine.
Being a winemaker is not the most glamorous job at times and can be extremely exhausting. What makes being a winemaker worth it?
The best part of my job is seeing people enjoy my hard work and creating unforgettable moments with their family and friends with one, or maybe a few, bottles of wine.
